Slots explained
The reel is the display. The maths sets the game.
Online slots combine a random result with a published paytable and feature rules. Understanding paylines, RTP and volatility will not predict a spin, but it does make the game easier to assess.
What happens when a spin starts
The game's random number generator produces an outcome according to the slot's tested rules. The reels then display that outcome as symbols. On a licensed UK site, gambling software must meet the Gambling Commission's remote technical standards and relevant testing requirements.
A previous win or loss does not make the next random result “due”. Stopping a reel animation early usually changes only how quickly the already-produced result is shown, not the result itself.

Wins form from groups of matching symbols touching in the positions described by the game rules.
Paytable

RTP: useful, but often misread
Return to player is the theoretical percentage of stakes a game is modelled to return across a very large number of plays under specified conditions. A 96% RTP does not mean a person receives £96 back from every £100 session. Short-term outcomes can sit far above or below the model.
Some games are supplied in more than one RTP configuration. Check the information screen in the version actually offered by the operator rather than relying on a figure from a review of another version.
Volatility describes the pattern of returns
Lower-volatility slots are generally modelled for more frequent, smaller returns; higher-volatility games tend toward less frequent, more variable returns. The label is not a promise for a session. It also does not make one game better value than another — RTP and volatility describe different parts of the maths.
Features and bonus rounds
Wild symbols may substitute for specified symbols. Scatters often pay or trigger a feature without following normal line rules. Free-spin rounds, multipliers, expanding symbols and hold-and-respin features each follow their own paytable. Read those rules before using autoplay or a feature-purchase option where one is legally available.
Themes do not change probability by themselves
A mythology theme, licensed character or elaborate animation is presentation. The paytable and maths model determine how the slot behaves. Two visually similar games can have different RTP options, volatility and maximum exposure per spin.
